The Giver Blog

While reading The Giver by Lois Lowry, there have been lots of differences in their society then in our society. A big difference is that there are women who have a job giving birth to children to give to parents. In chapter three, Lily and here mother are observing Gabriel when Lily says, "I hope I get assigned to be a birth mother." If you don't remember, citizens get assigned jobs at a certain age. Lily wanted to be a birth Mother as she was looking at Gabriel, but then her mother discouraged her and told her to set her mind off that dream saying it isn't a job you would want. This society may have to resort to doing this because they probably are focused on keeping their population stable. They maybe don't want women to start giving birth to their own children because that will increase the population. If women start to procreate themselves, then the population will rise in a matter of years and could cause chaos throughout the community.

We have been interrupted by our main plot a lot to explore early memories of a main character. Mainly to further explain a rule/moral the community goes by or to foreshadow a further event that can happen in the book. Throughout this whole chapter, Jonas's father talked a lot about how the ceremony for the 12's goes and answered some of Jonas's questions about the ceremony. In chapter three, the morning before Jonas leaves in the morning his father says, "every December was exciting to me when I was young." Jonas's dad throughout the whole chapter tells Jonas about what the ceremony for the 12's is like and this just makes Jonas more nervous then he already is. I think this memory is important because maybe it can foreshadow that something could go wrong at the ceremony. Jonas can possibly not like his job or get nervous on his first day.
